Simple Skirt Re-fashion

I had been on the lookout for a long denim skirt for some time. Something that is not often "in fashion" here, so I knew it would be unlikely to find one at the shops. I did however spot this one in the op shop a few months ago, and at only $4, it came home with me.

It had splits up the side, and one of them kept ripping up each time I wore it. I shelved it for the time being, and went about scouring Pinterest for re-fashion ideas. I liked the idea of using a different denim in the splits, but worried that my simple machine wouldn't cope with sewing through double layers of denim. Then while at Spotlight last week, I spotted some retro fabric on sale for $6 p/m! I knew it would be perfect for my skirt.

Here is what I did to up-cycle this skirt into something more wearable:

1. Unpicked the splits to the height I wanted.
2. Turn the skirt inside out, and lay it flat, split in the middle, on the table.
3. Lay the material wrong side up over the split, and pin in place.
4. Sew the material in place, ensuring you reinforce the stitches on the bottom hem and also the top of the split.
5. Cut excess fabric off, leaving enough along the bottom to hem up.
6. Fold, iron and pin the hem in line with the existing denim hem.
7. Sew up hem, ensuring you reinforce the start and end stitches.

Repeat for other split.

So easy and took me around a 1/2 hour to complete. I only used about .5 of a metre of fabric, so all up this skirt only cost me $7! And the best part is, it's one of a kind!!

  1. Fantastic! What a simple solution - I have such a skirt in my wardrobe with splits up the sides (and sadly, not the legs to match!) and was all set to toss it in the charity bag..no more. I can't wait to give it a new lease on life, thankyou! :)
