30 Days Hath November :: Day 5

Day 5 :: Hometown

I have to say that I have never been fond of my hometown, Nambour. It didn't have the greatest reputation as I was growing up, and we referred to it as Nam-boring and The Hole. But maybe that's just a typical teenager thing... to not like where you live?

When I was young, Nambour was a sugar town, with a large mill right in the centre and the sickly sweet smell that came with that. Cane burning every year meant some days everthing was blanketed in black ash. But the mill is gone now, as are most of the cane farms, and right now they are building a large supermarket and shopping centre on that site.

Some uninteresting facts about Nambour!::

The 2011 Census recorded 18,134 residents.
The former Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, is from Nambour.
As is the current Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, Wayne Swan.
I was born at Nambour Hospital in 1983.
The name, Nambour, is derived from the Aboriginal word "naamba", referring to the red flowering tea tree.
The area was first settled in 1870. My Dad's side of the family settled in 1890. You could say I'm a local!

Well that's my hometown. I'm kinda glad I only go there once a fortnight. It makes me appreciate it more....
